Follow a sensible diet for high blood pressure control

Food has a major role to play in controlling hypertension. Following the right diet for high blood pressure control can make a big difference. Medication, of course, is often necessary to tackle the problem. However, the patient should also make it a point to eat food items that can help lower blood pressure naturally and avoid those that have the opposite effect.

There are many kinds of fruits and vegetables that can lower blood pressure. Oranges, cabbages and potatoes are a few examples of such items. Foods containing vitamin C are thought to be useful for blood pressure reduction and should be included in a diet for high blood pressure. In general, it is preferable to increase the consumption of fresh fruits and vegetables while cutting down on red meat.

For similar reasons, whole eggs should be avoided by hypertensive patients. This is because egg yolk contains high levels of cholesterol. Egg white is not so cholesterol-rich and can usually be consumed by patients.

There is one food item that should be completely avoided if at all possible - alcohol. Alcohol has a significant negative effect on high blood pressure. It can cause unhealthy weight gain. It can also lead to depletion of magnesium and calcium in the body. Moreover, alcohol interferes with the action of medication given to control high blood pressure. This can be a serious problem in treating the condition. If the patient finds it difficult to give up alcohol completely, he or she should at least limit consumption to the levels permitted by the doctor.

Sticking to the right diet for high blood pressure can produce huge benefits for the patient. In some cases, diet control coupled with exercise can do the job of bringing blood pressure down to safe levels. If that is possible, the patient may be able to avoid the use of medication altogether. The appropriate lifestyle changes can go a long way towards dealing with hypertension.
